Letting Lox In (Marco's MMA Boys #1) by S.M. Donaldson on Sale Today For .99 What a Steal!

synopsis:

Sloan Foster was always a good girl. An honor student in high school, she had big plans for herself, and then college happened. She thought she’d met the man of her dreams in hometown football star Lucas Smith. Then she had the earth shattering realization that dreams were just that…dreams. She found herself pregnant, right about the time he got drafted for the NFL and dropped her like a bad habit. Now a struggling 25 year old single mom, she works as a massage therapist and is determined to take care of her son, Sage, on her own, without a dime from him. No matter how many times he tries to pay her to ensure her silence.

Loxley Storm was raised by his mom, his dad was a dead beat he never knew. Growing up, he had anger issues and got into a lot of trouble for fighting. Thankfully, a man named Marco took him under his wing and helped him learn to control his anger by fighting…in the ring. Now 26, he is an MMA fighter working to become pro, helping run Marco’s gym along with his best friends, Sly and Huck. To the trio, getting tied down with women is something they don’t need. To blow off steam, they have the “hit it and quit it” motto.

Until an injury in a fight lands Lox on Sloan’s massage table, where sparks fly and neither can deny the attraction. The more pieces of Sloan Lox finds out, the more he respects her and her accomplishments as a single mom. Sloan is hesitant to trust another man, and she sure doesn’t want to risk her son getting hurt, but how long can she keep Lox at arm’s length? Will she let Lox in? Or will she let her past ruin her chances of finding love again?

About The Author:

S.M. Donaldson is a born and raised Southern girl. She grew up in a small rural town on Florida’s Gulf Coast, the kind of place where everyone knows your business before you do, especially when your Daddy is a cop and your Mom works for the school system. She married one of her best friends at the age of 20 and has one son. She is a proud military wife, has always had a soft spot for a good story, and is known to have a potty mouth. At the age of 31, she decided there was no time like the present to attempt her first book. Sam’s Choice was born and she hasn’t stopped since. If you are looking for a good, steamy, Southern set romance with true Southern dialect, she’s your girl.

Around The World ARC Tours Presents One by Sarah Crossan

Synopsis:

Tippi and Grace share everything—clothes, friends . . . even their body. Writing in free verse, Sarah Crossan tells the sensitive and moving story of conjoined twin sisters, which will find fans in readers of Gayle Forman, Jodi Picoult, and Jandy Nelson.

Tippi and Grace. Grace and Tippi. For them, it’s normal to step into the same skirt. To hook their arms around each other for balance. To fall asleep listening to the other breathing. To share. And to keep some things private. The two sixteen-year-old girls have two heads, two hearts, and each has two arms, but at the belly, they join. And they are happy, never wanting to risk the dangerous separation surgery.

But the girls’ body is beginning to fight against them. And soon they will have to face the impossible choice they have avoided for their entire lives.

Review:

One...... One....... One...... this was such a different book for me to read but I laughed and I cried and I thought about the documentaries I watched about Conjoined twins. I as a mother can not express what I would do and how I would react to it all but this book had me crying and thinking and looking on the internet of conjoined twins and watching their stories and it really broke my heart.

This story follows conjoined twins who decide they want to be separated and live a normal life. But as they soon found out that being separated was not going to be easy and the ups and downs they have to go through will tear at your heart and you feel like you are right in the room with them.

In the end they make a decision and what happens afterwards will shock you. This book is not for the weary or faint of heart because it deals with some serious issues.

Around The World ARC Tours Presents Mirrored by Alex Flinn

Synopsis:

A modern, multi-generational tale of Kendra, the witch from "Snow White," who trains Violet, an ugly, lonely, and heartbroken girl in the 1980s who transforms herself into "the fairest one of all" but still cannot win Greg's heart, and Celine, Greg's daughter with Violet's high school rival, Jennifer.

Review:

Okay first I have to say that I absolutely love retelling of fairy tales. Snow White is one of them and I have to say that from page one I was hooked and could not stop reading. I was at the water park with the kids and they were splashing and having fun as I laid on my towel and read away. A few hours later my back was so hot I could not figure out why until my daughter said mom we have to go home you have sun poisoning on your back. I said oh crap I never reapplied my medicine so you know that this book is one fantastic read because I got sun poisoning from reading the book.

Can you imagine the original Snow White story in your head. Poor Snow White losing her mother only to get an evil step mother that will do anything to remove her from the picture. Well this one has so many twists and turns and so many EVIL things going on that you will not be able to put this book down. I mean I read the whole book at the park because I could not put it down. I loved Celine's character and Violet that evil witch will soon find out who to mess with and who not to mess with.

About Author:

I was born in a log cabin in the Big Woods of . . . okay, maybe not. I was born in a small town on Long Island, New York. When I was five years old, my mom said that I should be an author. I guess I must have nodded or something because, from that point on, every poem I ever wrote in school was submitted to Highlights or Cricket magazine. I was collecting rejection slips at age seven!

I learned to read early and often. But I compensated for this early proficiency by absolutely refusing to read the programmed readers required by the school system — workbooks where you read the story, then answered the questions. When the other kids were on Book 20, I was on Book 1! My teacher, Mrs. Zeiser, told my mother, “Alexandra marches to her own drummer.” I don’t think that was supposed to be a good thing. Now, when my daughter, Katie, brings home FCAT prep materials where you are supposed to read a passage and answer questions, I want to ask the teacher, “Does she really need to do this? She can read!!!”

My favorite authors were Astrid Lindgren, Beverly Cleary, Judy Blume, Marilyn Sachs, and Laura Ingalls Wilder. I also read A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett about 50 times. I think I always thought Ram Dass and his monkey might sneak into my room with a magical picnic all my own!

My family moved to Miami when I was in middle school. I had a really hard time making friends, so I spent a lot of time reading and writing then. But unlike Christopher Paolini or Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, I never finished writing a novel. That was also when I learned to be a keen observer (Picture Harriet the Spy). By high school, I’d made some friends and gotten involved in various “gifted and talented” performing arts programs. I studied opera in college (I’m a coloratura — the really loud, high-pitched sopranos.) and then went to law school.

It was law school that probably helped with my first novel. Breathing Underwater deals with the serious and all-too-common problem of dating violence. I based the book on my experiences interning with the State Attorney’s Office and volunteering with battered women. I thought this was a really important topic, as 27 % of teenage girls surveyed have been hit by a boyfriend. I’m happy that the book is so popular, and if you are reading this bio because the book was assigned for school, I’m happy about that too.

I started writing an early (and laughable) version of Breathing Underwater in college (I was really bored on a car trip with my parents). I didn’t get back to it until I had my first daughter, Katie. I’m self-taught. I went to the library and took out books on writing. Then, I read a lot of young-adult novels by writers I admired, particularly Richard Peck. Reading his books is like listening to Mozart — you learn the right way to write a novel. Then, you fill in your own style. I actually got to meet Richard Peck in person at a workshop of the Key West Literary Seminar. Lots of writers have been really helpful to me, especially Richard and fellow YA author, Joyce Sweeney.

I write my first drafts longhand. At first, I did that because I didn’t own a computer. Then, I borrowed a memory typewriter and finally purchased a computer three years after I began writing. A year later Breathing Underwater was finished then accepted.

I think I write for young-adults because I never quite got over being one. In my mind, I am still 13-years-old, running laps on the athletic field, wearing this really baggy white gymsuit. I’m continually amazed at the idea that I have a checking account and a mortgage. So I try to write books that gymsuit girl might enjoy. It’s a way of going back to being thirteen . . . knowing what I know now.

Right now, I live half a mile away from my old middle school, in Palmetto Bay, a suburb of Miami, with my husband, Gene, and daughters, Katie and Meredith.

Around The World ARC Tours Presents Cut Both Ways by Carrie Mesrobian

Synopsis:

Will Caynes never has been good with girls. At seventeen, he’s still waiting for his first kiss. He’s certainly not expecting it to happen in a drunken make-out session with his best friend, Angus. But it does and now Will’s conflicted—he knows he likes girls, but he didn’t exactly hate kissing a guy.

Then Will meets Brandy, a cute and easy-to-talk-to sophomore. He’s totally into her too—which proves, for sure, that he’s not gay. So why does he keep hooking up with Angus on the sly?

Will knows he can’t keep seeing both of them, but besides his new job in a diner, being with Brandy and Angus are the best parts of his whole messed-up life. His divorced parents just complicate everything. His father, after many half-baked business ventures and endless house renovations, has started drinking again. And his mom is no help—unless loading him up with a bunch of stuff he doesn’t need plus sticking him with his twin half-sisters counts as parenting. He’s been bouncing between both of them for years, and neither one feels like home.

Deciding who to love, who to choose, where to live. Whichever way Will goes, someone will get hurt. Himself, probably the most.

Review:

Cut Both Ways is one of those books that captures your heart right from the beginning. Yes it is a story that may not be for some but every one should give it a try.

You have a straight guy who has a gay friend. They hang out together and every thing is normal between them until one day the lines are crossed for them and one is more confused than the other. For Will he is straight in his mind and heart but when it comes to Angus Will is not sure how he feels about him and what he wants from him.

As the summer wraps up and the new school year starts Will decides that he will get a girlfriend and prove to himself that he is not gay. This does not work because he is living a lie because he cares for Angus and he cares for his girlfriend. So what is Will to do? He is not sure why he loves both Angus and his girlfriend but he knows he is cut both ways and there is nothing he can do about it.

About Author:

I’ve worked as a teacher in both public and private schools; my writing has appeared in the StarTribune, Brain, Child magazine, Calyx, and other web and print publications. I teach teenagers about writing at The Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis. However, the best job I ever had was when I worked in a thrift store pawing through donations of cast-off junk. Loved that job so much.

My first two books, Sex & Violence &  Perfectly Good White Boy were published by Carolrhoda LAB.

My third book, Cut Both Ways, (HarperCollins), will be released September 2015.

All these books are young adult novels with male narrators. Maybe I will do a girl narrator next? Who the hell knows?

I wish I could report all sorts of cute quirky things that I do, but really, I’m kind of boring. I read a lot and never really go anywhere and don’t see that changing ever. Probably I should get some hobbies or something? Sometimes I crochet stuff.

Oh, wait! Here is a picture of me looking dastardly! But it’s really just because my hair’s wet and I just busted out a new beautiful Benefit Brow pencil. I kind of have a thing about cosmetics and beauty products, if you want to know the truth.

I live with Adrian, my husband, Matilda, my daughter, and Pablo, my dog. All of whom are super interesting, actually. Built-in entertainment, really.

Oh! Here’s me answering “Hostile Questions” for The Booklist Reader. That might be helpful.

Also, I am represented by this very excellent person named Michael Bourret at DGLM. He does all my business-y things. Like, in case you want to pay me stacks of cash to make up stories or would like me to blurb your book or whatever.

If you have questions, my email’s below and Pablo will handle it. He knows next to nothing but he’s very enthusiastic.

Around The World ARC Tours Presents Public Enemies (Immortal Game #2) by Ann Aguirre

Synopsis:

In Book 2 of the Immortal Game trilogy, Edie must learn the rules of the game . . . and then play better than anyone else.

Through a Faustian bargain, Edie Kramer has been pulled into the dangerous world of the Immortal Game, where belief makes your nightmares real. Hungry for sport, fears-made-flesh are always raising the stakes. To them, human lives are less than nothing, just pieces on a board.

Because of her boyfriend Kian's sacrifice, she's operating under the mysterious Harbinger's aegis, but his patronage could prove as fatal as the opposition. Raw from deepest loss, she's terrified over the deal Kian made for her. Though her very public enemies keep sending foot soldiers--mercenary monsters committed to her destruction--she's not the one playing under a doom clock. Kian has six months...unless Edie can save him. And this is a game she can't bear to lose.

Review:

Okay Okay Okay........ I have to get this out first because there are two things that bugged the heck out of me about this book. The first is what the hell happened to the cover?????????? Did I miss something and the cover designer changed? The second thing that bothered me was that it took me a few chapters to get into the story. I mean The Immortal Game the first book had me on the edge of my seat from page one and I could not put the book down but it took me a few days to read Public Enemies.

Public Enemies starts off right where Immortal Game left off where Edie is still grieving the loss of her mother and she is trying to figure out a way to save her boyfriend Kian. She is stuck right in the middle of the game trying to save Kian and she has no idea who to trust or who can help her. The Harbinger is a matter of life and death and Edie wll have to find a way to get Kian back and to safety.

Can Edie save him or will they both succumb to the game........

Around The World ARC Tours Presents The One Thing by Marci Lyn Curtis

Synopsis:

"A soaring tale of life and love, of sacrifice and renewal, and learning to see people as they really are."

Maggie Sanders might be blind, but she won't invite anyone to her pity party. Ever since losing her sight six months ago, Maggie's rebellious streak has taken on a life of its own, culminating with an elaborate school prank. Maggie called it genius. The judge called it illegal.

Now Maggie has a probation officer. But she isn't interested in rehabilitation, not when she's still mourning the loss of her professional-soccer dreams, and furious at her so-called friends, who lost interest in her as soon as she could no longer lead the team to victory.

Then Maggie's whole world is turned upside down. Somehow, incredibly, she can see again. But only one person: Ben, a precocious ten-year-old unlike anyone she's ever met.Ben's life isn't easy, but he doesn't see limits, only possibilities. After awhile, Maggie starts to realize that losing her sight doesn't have to mean losing everything she dreamed of. Even if what she's currently dreaming of is Mason Milton, the infuriatingly attractive lead singer of Maggie's new favorite band, who just happens to be Ben's brother.

But when she learns the real reason she can see Ben, Maggie must find the courage to face a once-unimaginable future...before she loses everything she has grown to love.

Can you imagine you have it all, school, great friends, and great family? Well Maggie Sanders has it all until she loses her sight and with that she loses her friends and her dreams of being a professional soccer player. Being in the dark for Maggie will not tear her down and will not discourage her from living her life.

This is a must read for everyone to read and re-read!!!

About The Author:

I write teen stories about characters who set up camp in my head and refuse to leave.

Generally they are sarcastic.

I'm represented by the half-guru, half-rockstar Kathleen Rushallat Marsal Lyon Literary Agency.

Random facts about me:

I've lived in Montana, Northern and Southern California, Florida, the Big Island of Hawaii, Tennessee, Connecticut, Oahu, and (now) Maryland.

All my books start out on lined paper, the backs of grocery-store receipts, and napkins.

I'm crazy in love with my husband.

I'm also in love with grumpy old people and Dark Chocolate M & Ms. Not necessarily in that order.

I don't squish spiders; I carry them out of the house.

Deleted scenes

April 2, 2015

Today you can find one of my deleted scenes (or part of one, anyway) over on the Fall Fifteeners blog! Check it out here.

Fall Fifteener deleted scenes

I’m not going to point fingers or anything, but some of us (ahem, me), tend to get a smidge wordy in our stories. I mean, who can blame us for overwriting? As authors, we have a nerdy love affair with words. Problem is, many of these words don’t quite eke their way past the firestorm of revisions, and in the end, they end up crammed into some dusty file in our laptops and never see the light of day.

But.

Today we—the wordiest of the Fall Fifteeners—are sharing them:

Marci Lyn Curtis from The One Thing

When I was in the third grade, Trevor Wilson dared me to eat a fish eye. Well, it wasn’t technically a dare, but he submitted to me that there was “no way in hell” I’d be able to eat it, so it had felt like a dare. If he were a normal eight-year-old boy, I probably would have just ignored him. But, in fact, he was not. Trevor was the very same tumbleweed-headed douchebag who had repeatedly tripped Sophie during soccer practice, so there was no question as to whether or not I’d accept his dare.

Anyway, it happened at school, during recess, where all great dares take place. I was sitting on a swing, chatting with a classmate, when Trevor Von Douchebag stuck his obnoxious, fish-eye-holding hand in my face and said, “Sanders, there’s no way in hell you could eat this fish eye,” and without even fully considering it, I said, “Oh yes, I can,” and he said, “Prove it,” and so I plucked the thing off his hand, tossed it into the back of my mouth, and swallowed. Just like that. My stubbornness, I discovered that day, was superior to my circumstances.

***************

Mackenzie Lee This Monstrous Thing

I had never played billiards before. Oliver was rather good at it, though I didn’t have a clue where he’d learned—probably something he’d picked up from his mad friends in Paris. Mary outdid us both though. She won the first two games, Oliver the next, and I was so bad it was embarrassing. By the fourth I was growing weary of being beaten and announced I was going to sit it out, but Oliver wouldn’t hear it. “Don’t be sore just because you aren’t good.”

“Thanks for that. Now I’m really keen to stay in.”

“Come on, Ally, don’t quit.” He scrubbed chalk over the top of his cue and grinned at me across the table. “You might make a shot yet.”

“You aren’t helping.”

“Come on, Alasdair.” Mary stepped around the table so we were side by side and put her hands on the table. “Don’t sit out, it won’t be fun without you.”

I put my hands next to hers, flat with my fingers splayed. “I’m awful.”

“It’s your first time. You’ll get better.”

“Get your fingers off the table,” Oliver called from the other end. “You’re putting me off.”

***************

Diana Gallagher Lessons in Falling

I have never lost a game of Manhunt.

Cassie isn’t patient enough for hide-and-seek in the dark. She would rather be found, squealing and laughing. She’s always been the best at pulling people near her, people who want to hear her stories or kiss her.

I’m the best at hiding. Slipping into small spaces, knees and elbows covered in dirt. We gave up Manhunt three summers ago. But I am still that girl with her back pressed against the tree, listening to receding footsteps.

***************

Ann Jacabus Romancing the Dark in the City of Light

(In a dodgy part of Paris)

Greasy Mardi Gras masks and beads dangle above the entrance; ratty soccer pennants, musty stuffed birds and other detritus are nailed to the smudged walls and ceiling. It’s the kind of place that probably still sports a Turkish toilet—a porcelain hole in the floor. As if to confirm her suspicion, the smell of urine hits her. The only other patron is an older woman in a bedraggled fur cape who slumps at the far end of the wooden bar. She gives them the evil eye and mumbles what sounds like “ne me parles pas, Justine,”—don’t talk to me, Justine.

Don’t worry, Summer thinks.

Kurt is chucking. He’s taken one of the few cramped tables.

“Can I have some whiskey?” Summer asks at the bar. The wizened, brown-skinned guy squints at her through his glasses. He doesn’t respond. “Du whisky? S’il vous plait.” Without taking his eyes off her, he shoves a stained carte at Summer, the list of wines and a few snacks.

He pours a single glass. “Two,” she says. “Deux.” She holds up two fingers then points to Kurt at the table. The man squints, then pours more in the same glass. “Deux verres. Two glasses.” Clearly a card-carrying idiot.

She takes the glasses to the dusty table. Kurt says, “Remember, they hold up one finger and the thumb, for ‘two’ here.” He demonstrates, making the “L” for loser.

Around The World ARC Tours Presents Daughter of Deep Silence by Carrie Ryan

Synopsis:

I’m the daughter of murdered parents.
I’m the friend of a dead girl.
I’m the lover of my enemy.
And I will have my revenge.

In the wake of the devastating destruction of the luxury yacht Persephone, just three souls remain to tell its story—and two of them are lying. Only Frances Mace knows the terrifying truth, and she’ll stop at nothing to avenge the murders of everyone she held dear. Even if it means taking down the boy she loves and possibly losing herself in the process.

Sharp and incisive, Daughter of Deep Silence by bestselling author Carrie Ryan is a deliciously smart revenge thriller that examines perceptions of identity, love, and the lengths to which one girl is willing to go when she thinks she has nothing to lose.

Review:

In the description of this book it says it all......

I’m the daughter of murdered parents.

I’m the friend of a dead girl.

I’m the lover of my enemy.

And I will have my revenge.

My God this book was one read I could not put down. I went shopping and I was reading because I could not believe what was going on. I want to say so much but I don't want to ruin it for the readers but I will say this think about multiple personalities, revenge, and love.

What happens when a girl washes up on shore and does not know who she is....... well you will have to read it to find out!

About The Author:

The Short Version...

Carrie Ryan is the New York Times bestselling author of the critically acclaimedForest of Hands and Teeth series, which has been translated into over eighteen languages and is in development as a major motion picture. She is also the editor of the anthology Foretold: 14 Tales of Prophecy and Prediction, as well as author ofInfinity Ring: Divide and Conquer, the second book in Scholastic's new multi-author/multi-platform series for middle grade readers.

Born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina, Carrie is a graduate of Williams College and Duke University School of Law. A former litigator, she now writes full time. She lives with her writer/lawyer husband, two fat cats and one large rescue mutt in Charlotte, North Carolina. They are not at all prepared for the zombie apocalypse. You can find her online at www.carrieryan.com or @CarrieRyan.

The Long Version...

Carrie was born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina. During her time in high school she was: vice president of her class, a cheerleader (no, seriously), captain of the field hockey team (one of only two teams in SC—her team was always state champs) and founder of the girls soccer team (she played on the boys team for a year until the school created the girls team, which, by the way, went from losing every game its first season to being ranked fourth in the state Carrie's senior year!). She also wrote her first short story, Crab Shell Angels, for Mrs. Carter's class on Southern Fiction.

On weekends she read. Everything from Sweet Valley High to Romance to Christopher Pike. As far as her parents know, she never threw a party while they were out of town (*cough*).

Deciding to try a different climate, Carrie went to Williams College (go Ephs!) home of the purple cows—no, seriously, that's their mascot. She played field hockey and lacrosse for a year before becoming involved in student government and other nefarious organizations. She also spearheaded a project to renovate and re-open the local student pub. She was an avid mountain biker and a member of the Williams Cycling Team (their jerseys were white with purple cow spots—they were easy to pick out of the peloton).

During the various summers Carrie hiked the Wind River Wilderness Mountains with NOLS, worked as an intern at the Greenville County Coroner's Office, worked on a Mayan archeological dig in El Peten, Guatemala, and taught SAT prep for The Princeton Review.

As it turns out, Massachusetts, while amazing, is cold much of the year. So after graduating and dabbling in an internet start-up (it was 2000, everyone was doing it) she moved to Middleburg, Virginia and worked at the Foxcroft School. That's where she finished her first book and wrote her second. She tried to convince agents that they really wanted a sensual western historical romance, but they were quite adamant that they did not. So she decided to write chick lit. Unfortunately, most chick lit showcased exciting city life and Carrie's life was pretty boring in the Virginia countryside. So she came up with the brilliant plan of going to law school and getting a job in a big city so she could have an exciting life to draw from.

And if that didn't work out, at least she'd still have the legal career to fall back on. It was at Duke Law School where she met her fiancé JP, a speculative fiction writer who taught her all about true love. JP is the one who convinced Carrie to go to that first zombie movie, which for the life of her she can't remember why—she must have still been trying to impress him because Carrie has disliked all horror movies since the Poltergeist incident of 1983. The remake of Dawn of the Dead fascinated Carrie and JP fanned the fires with more zombies movies and a timely gift of The Zombie Survival Guide (which he read out loud to her every night).

After graduating, they moved to Charlotte and embarked on a plan to get serious about writing. Carrie tried to write her chick lit but that market was dead and she liked young adult books so much better. After a few false starts, JP convinced Carrie to write what she loved and she started writing about zombies. There are so many movies about the days and weeks after a zombie apocalypse, but Carrie wanted to know what happened much later—generations later. The Forest of Hands and Teeth is her first published novel and she's excited to be writing even more novels set in the same world.

These are just a few of the questions I've been asked so far. Please feel free toask your own and I'll add them to the list!

Is there a sequel to The Forest of Hands and Teeth?

Yes, The Forest of Hands and Teeth is the first of three books. The second, The Dead-Tossed Wavescame out in March 2010 and the third, The Dark and Hollow Places came out in March 2011.

Is there going to be a movie of The Forest of Hands and Teeth?

Seven Star Pictures has picked up the movie rights for The Forest of Hands and Teeth but it's still too early to tell if they'll develop it into a movie. AsPublishers Weekly reports here, "Supposedly Seven Star is developing the project for an-as-yet-unnamed A-list starlet, and fast-tracking the project with a first draft of the screenplay already in the works." More information on the Seven Star Pictures websitehere.

How can I get an autographed copy of your books?

I've partnered with Park Road Books, my local indie, to provide personalized, autographed copies of my books or you can also send me a SASE for a bookplate. click here for my address and for more information.

Will your books be coming out in any other countries?

Right now The Forest of Hands and Teeth is published by Gollancz in Australia and New Zealand (available April, 2009) and in the United Kingdom (available July 2009) and by Verlagsgruppe Random House in Germany (available August, 2009). It will also be published in Spain and Latin America by Random House Mondadori, in France by Gallimard, in Greece by Platypus Publishing, in the Czech Republic by Mlada fronta in Portugal by Edicoes Gailivro, in Turkey by Pegasus Yayincilik and in Vietnam by Hagiang Comcul.

Are your books in any other formats?

There's an audiobook of The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Listening Library with Vane Millon as the narrator. There's also an ebook and a kindle version.

German
Have you ever written any other books?

Before writing The Forest of Hands and Teeth I'd finished two books and started scores of others. My first complete novel was a western historical romance that I started while in college. The second was a romantic comedy I wrote the year after. Then I concocted this odd long term plan to go to law school and move to a big city so that I could feel qualified to write chick lit. I started a few chick lit books and then on a lark started writing The Forest of Hands and Teeth when my then boyfriend suggested that I write what I love.

How did you find an agent?

UK, Australia, New Zealand

First, I finished the book. Then I revised it a few times. After that, when I felt ready to submit (and while I was waiting for a few beta readers to get back to me) I did a lot of research. I read many articles and blogs about the process and asked questions of friends who'd been through the process before me. I also read a lot of agent blogs to see what each was interested in and to learn their styles and personalities. I looked at books that I thought were similar to mine and found out who their agents were and kept track of the recent deals on Publisher's Lunch Weekly to see which agents were selling books like mine. I learned how to write a query letter and then I asked my beta readers to help me boil down my book into a pitch paragraph (I highly recommend asking early readers to help you see the forest for the trees). Then I sent out the queries and waited!

A few websites I'd recommend for the process: Agent Query —a database of agents, what they represent and how to query them Preditors and Editors—a listing of scam and legitimate agents Publishers Marketplace—their full services is $20 a month to search their database of sales. Or you can sign up for a weekly email of recent sales called Publishers Lunch Weekly.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Greenville, South Carolina.

Where did you go to high school?

I was a Cavalier at Christ Church Episcopal School.

Where did you go to college?

I was an English major at Williams College (go Ephs!). Our mascot was the purple cows! I was on the cycling team and our uniforms were white with purple cow spots—we were very easy to pick out of the peloton. I loved my time at Williams. I took creative writing with National Book Award nominee Jim Shepard and that's where I found my voice.

What did you do after college?

Right out of college a few friends and I started a dot.com business. It was in 2000 and everyone was joining the boom! Of course, with the crash we lost part of our funding and so I went to work as the assistant technology coordinator and resident relief at Foxcroft School in Middleburg, Virginia. It was an amazing experience on a gorgeous campus. Once I decided I wanted to go to law school I found a job as a real estate paralegal with a small firm back home in Greenville, South Carolina and worked there for a year while I applied to schools. Then I went to law school (Duke University School of Law) where I met and fell in love with my fiancé, JP! After law school I litigated for a few years before moving into trusts and estates where I worked before quitting to write fulltime.

Do you have any siblings?

I do! I have two sisters whom I adore. In fact, I started writing because as a teen I strived to emulate one of my sisters. Both my sisters are amazing role models and wonderfully supportive of me—I couldn't ask for better sisters and great friends! I also have two step-brothers who are incredibly passionate about life. One of them is an award winning soccer coach/math teacher and the other one is a fantastic chef (trust me, we eat very well when he's around).

Where do you get your inspiration?

Anything and everything. The first line of The Forest of Hands and Teeth came to me after I read an article about the possibility of overfishing tuna. The issue of collective memory came to me when I realized how my memories of my grandmother have been slipping away and how I can't remember the details of the stories she used to tell over and over again.

Are the characters similar to anyone you know?

So far, none of the characters in my books are similar to anyone I know, though one of them is named after a friend of mine.

What scene from The Forest of Hands and Teeth was hardest to write?

SPOILER:

There were a lot of scenes that were very hard for me to write because I felt so sorry for Mary. But I think the one that was the hardest is when she first goes to see her mother infected and her mother puts her hands in her hair. Mary says: "If I could boil my life down to its essence, it would be this: my head in my mother's lap, her hands in my hair as we sit in front of the fire and she tells me stories handed down through the women of our family about life before the Return." This reminded me so much of my own mother and all the countless hours I've laid with my head in her lap, her playing with my hair. I couldn't bear to think of my mother dying and I tried to channel that fear and pain into that scene.

What is your writing process like?

I sit down and think: "what's the worst thing that can happen?" I don't outline and the most I ever plan ahead is to lounge about in bed and daydream about what could come next. My fiancé claims this is called napping and not working but I disagree!

Where do you write?

I tend to write on the couch in our office (which would be the living room if anyone other than two writers lived there). In the winter I turn the fire on and in the summer I open the windows.

How long did it take you to write The Forest of Hands and Teeth?

It took me four months to write the first draft of The Forest of Hands and Teethand another four to revise it many times. I started writing it during National Novel Writing Month in 2006 and sold it in October 2007.

Who is your agent?

I'm represented by Merrilee Heifetz at Writers House.

What television shows do you watch?

Yes, I admit it, I watch a lot of reality TV. My favorites are Top Chef, America's Next Top Model and Whose Wedding is it Anyway? Recently, I've become addicted toNinja Warrier and Survivorman. I also follow Lost and Doctor Who. Dinnertime at our house would not be complete without The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.
