Literati Literature Lovers Presents A Book Blitz For Templand by Jill Elaine Hughes

Title: Templand
Author: Jill Elaine Hughes
Genre: Contemporary romance
Age: New Adult
Publication Date: December 24, 2012

Event organized by: Literati Literature Lovers:

Book Description:

The heroine, Melanie Evers, is a plucky young working-class woman from Akron, Ohio struggling to support herself in Chicago in the post-9-11 economy.

TEMPLAND follows Melanie's journey through the temporary employment world from a college student on "just a summer job" to a 28-year-old woman with a lot of intelligence (and a heap of student loan debt to match) through multiple layoffs and a series of ever-more-wacky temp assignments, as she struggles not only to survive, but also to find romance and always remain true to the honest, working-class values instilled in her by her beloved grandfather.

In her long, solitary journey through Templand, Melanie encounters adventure and romance on her search for that always-elusive Permanent Job---which she finally gets, along with her man. TEMPLAND is a highly entertaining, wickedly funny social satire, contemporary romance, and mystery novel all rolled into one.

My Review

5 of 5 Templand

Templand is one of those hidden gems where you pick it up and it starts out on way and then goes into a completely different way. This is why I think it is a gem of a red because I have never laughed and scowled at a book so many times than I have with this book. Lord the main character is a riot. Melanie is going from job to job a s a temp looking for the right job that will be come permanent. She is also looking for the right man.

This is Melanie's story of all the temp jobs she has had and what happens in them till she gets the job she wants and it becomes permanent. If you have ever had to temp then you know the nightmare jobs you have to do to get a permanent one then this book will have you laughing because you have been there and done that. If you have never temp in your life thank God everyday for that because it is a nightmare.

This is a must read that takes you on a journey of life, love and finding the right job for you!

Interview With Jill:

1. Some authors listen to music while writing, others prefer a quiet space. Which is your preference?

Definitely a quiet space! I require total silence when writing in order to concentrate. I do like to listen to a wide variety of music in other contexts, though — and I have found that listening to music when I’m not working — like in the car, at the gym, or while I’m doing housework — can spark writing inspiration that I draw from later.

2. What books did you read when you were a kid? Any books you found inspiring?

I was a very early reader — I taught myself to read without help (to this day my mother doesn’t know how, since I didn’t attend preschool and she didn’t teach me) and was reading chapter books by the time I entered kindergarten. I was reading adult novels by third grade, though I still enjoyed children’s literature.

My favorites included the Laura Ingalls Wilder “Little House” novels, Madeleine L’engle’s A Wrinkle in Time, anything by Roald Dahl, and classics like Little Women. I devoured everything Judy Blume wrote, too. Among adult authors, I enjoyed Stephen King’s many novels, family sagas like The Thorn Birds and anything by John Jakes, and historical fiction of all sorts.

Honestly, I could enjoy reading virtually anything, as long as the storyline and characters were strong. I always knew I’d be a writer of some sort, and began writing my own plays and short stories by third grade.

3. What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?

The toughest criticism I’ve received is that my writing is boring and lacks “hook,” or is too repetitive. (I frequently get these remarks from my news/journalism editors even today, after writing professionally for 20+ years — goes to show how you constantly have to improve your craft and find new ways to be fresh and original).

On the other hand, the best compliment I’ve ever received came recently on GoodReads, where a reader posted that she sat inside her car, in her driveway reading my book THE DOMINO EFFECT for an hour and a half because she didn’t want to put it down long enough to walk the 12 steps to her house!

4. What sort of Starbuck’s coffee would your characters order? Simple coffee, complicated soy-non-fat-extra-espresso-half-caffeine-nightmare?

It really depends on the character. Melanie Evers, the heroine of TEMPLAND, is a simple, no-frills Midwestern kind of girl. So she’d take her simple Folgers coffee with a dash of cream and one sugar.

But Melanie works for some really insane, high-maintenance bosses in TEMPLAND who would definitely demand a soy nonfat Mochalatte with rare Brazillian dark chocolate shavings melted into a Baroque lace design inside the French hand-whipped cream froth on the top, with a shot of extra caffeine and served in Wedgwood bone china on a silver platter.
