Excerpt #1:

Tension lines Peter’s neck and shoulders. His jaw shifts from side to side, like the conversation he just had pissed him off. His eyes flick up from the floor and meet mine. “My brother’s an asshole.”

I smile at him. “So is mine.”

Peter watches me for a moment and sighs. He runs his hands through his hair and stretches. The anger that was there washes away, but it’s not totally gone. “I need to tell you something.” The way he says it makes my stomach dip. The tone, and the way he looks away from me, sends a shiver down my spine.

Peter takes my hands and pulls me over to the couch. At first we’re seated next to each other and he’s holding my hand, but it’s like he can’t sit still. Peter is up and on his feet a few moments later, pacing. Every few seconds he tries to tell me something, but can’t choose the right words.

Peter makes an aggravated sound in the back of his throat. When he turns and looks at me, I know there’s something wrong. His dark brows lift and bunch together as his lips part. He stares at me for a moment, and then manages, “I didn’t want to bring this up, not now, but you need to know something about me.” He swallows hard and looks away.

I push off the couch and walk over to him. “You can tell me anything.” When I touch his arm, Peter jumps. It makes me nervous. Why is he acting this way? I grin at him. “You’re not the one who put the squirrel outside the bathroom window, are you?”

Peter snorts a surprised laugh and looks over at me. He takes me in his arms and pulls me to his chest. It feels so good, so safe.

He kisses the top of my head and says, “Do you know anything about the Ferro family?”

Excerpt #2:

Dean’s grinning ear to ear. “I can fix that, and buy you pretty ladies lunch if you like.”

“No. Go away.” I’d planned on ignoring him, but Dean won’t leave me alone. He keeps brushing into me, touching me, like it’s an accident. He follows me back to the hood and shoves in between me and Millie.

“We’re fine,” Millie tells him. “You should be on your way.”

“Awh, how sweet. Your little friend thinks she can protect you. What happened to the teacher?”

“Fuck off, Dean.” I’m mad now. I hate him. I hate everything about him, everything he’s done to me. My life would have been so different if Dean never came along. I’d run him over with the car if it would reset everything, but it won’t.

Dean feigns offense. “Who taught you to talk like that? Such a dirty mouth on such a pretty girl. Just the way I like it.” He gives me a wolfish grin. Millie makes an annoyed sound, but Dean ignores her. While I’m under the hood, Dean slips his hand onto my back. His fingers tease at the edge of my shirt and brush against the bare skin at my waist. The touch makes me jump.

I don’t think anymore, I just act. I swing my fist at his face and scream, “Leave me alone!”

Dean is smiling, acting like this is a game, until I land the punch on the side of his cheek. Anger flashes in his eyes. He backhands me before I can blink. The wrench goes flying out of my other hand and I stumble back. Millie screams, and I can hear the old guy yelling, but there are no words, just blurred sounds as pain shoots through my face.

Dean grabs my wrist and starts pulling me across the parking lot. “Walk or I’ll make you wish you had.”

EXCERPT #3:

Dinner is slow and silent. By the time we head back to the room, I’m ready for a long hot shower. Peter unlocks the door and for the first time, he flips on the lights. I stop in my tracks just on the other side of the door. Peter rams into my back nearly knocking me over. He grabs hold of my arms just above the elbow and steadies me.

“Holy shit.” The room is… I have no words. My senses are overwhelmed with thick textures, red velvets and satins. There’s a shag rug the color of a rose. One huge heart-shaped bed sits in the center of the room with a matching heart shaped mirror on the ceiling. I’m standing there with my hands clapped over my mouth.

Peter shoves past me. “She’s a nice old lady with interesting taste.” Peter sits down hard on the bed and pulls his shoes off. He flicks his eyes up at me after a second. I haven’t moved. “So it looks like a porn set from the 70’s, what’s the big deal?”

My eyes widen and I look over at him. “There’s a pole.” I walk forward and slowly reach out my hand toward the brass pole in the middle of the room. I move carefully, like it might bite.

Peter has a crooked smirk on his face. “You’re so prude.”

I yank my arm back and turn on him. “Are you insane? This room would make a prude person have a coronary! They’d fall over on the bed and watch themselves die in the ceiling mirror. There’s a pole!” My voice squeaks the last part.

Peter peels off his tee shirt and shakes his head. I watch him do it and wish I hadn’t. His body is so beautiful that it’s hard to look away, but I manage. My stomach does a little summersault just before I turn. “So hang your laundry on it and stop freaking out.”

“What kind of married couple uses a pole on their wedding night?”

He grins. Peter pushes off the bed and walks over to me. He looks down into my face. He’s standing too close, and from the look on his face, he’s doing it on purpose. “I think you’d stop freaking out if you’d seen a pole dance before. You know the woman doesn’t actually fuck the pole, right?”

My jaw drops. I make a high pitched sound and slap his chest. “Yes, I know that. And I suppose you’ve seen plenty of dances on one of these.”

“Yeah, but only at strip clubs.” His eyes drink me in. They’re so dark. He holds my gaze for a moment and adds, “How about a private performance?” I go to slap his face again, but Peter catches my wrist and stops me. It dawns on me that he could have stopped me last time, too, but he didn’t. His eyes flick back and forth between mine. “Stop slapping me, Colleli.”

“Stop giving me reasons to.”
