Mean Stinks Stop Bullying
You’ll never hear about stuff we hate, just stuff we heart.
We’re nice that way.
Q&A: Amber Riley Hates a Bully
July 28, 2011
Part of the reason why we love Glee is because it's about the underdogs -- the ones who are bullied, but still prevail! So, it makes perfect sense that Glee star Amber Riley has partnered with Secret and PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center for the Mean Stinks campaign.
We sat down with Amber to talk about the campaign, bullying and, of course, that show she's on:
I Heart Daily: What made you want to join the Mean Stinks Campaign?
Amber Riley: I want to help girls deal with bullying and take a stand against it. I get so many letters from girls and I want to inform them and give them a resource that helps deal with bullying and other tough issues.
IHD: Have you ever been bullied?
AR: I have been made fun of and teased, you know, like every other person. I did have a friend in high school who was a bully and I separated myself from her because I didn’t want to be associated with that. Actually my senior year, she wrote me a letter saying she knew she was wrong. She kind of just like apologized because she did miss our friendship and we had two totally different high school experiences -- she missed out because she was busy being mean.
IHD: Has Glee has opened a dialogue about bullying?
AR: I think there was a dialogue already before Glee even touched it. But Glee gave another opinion and added to [the discussion].
IHD: What would you tell someone who feels like they're in a hopeless situation in regards to being bullied?
AR: I would tell them if you can remove yourself from the situation, do. If not, tell an adult. Talk about it, don’t just keep it in and keep being bullied or get down on yourself and let it get worse. Secret's Mean Stinks page offers a forum for those who want advice from experts and peers. It’s a great place to start, but of course you still need to speak with an adult or person you trust as well.
IHD: Great advice. So... what are you hearting right now?
AR: I heart sleep because I’m deprived! So, I heart sleep, for sure!
Thanks, Amber! Sleep is key -- go rest! Everyone else, a coupon at Facebook.com/MeanStinks -- for every Secret Clinical Strength coupon redeemed Secret will donate $1 to the cause. Cool!

I really want to read this series called The Others by Karen Kincy
Gwen Williams has been hiding a strange and fantastic secret: she's a shapeshifter. Although society may tolerate vampires, centaurs, and "Others" like Gwen, there are plenty of folks in her small Washington town who don't care for her kind.
When a new werewolf pack moves into the area, tensions rise—and Others start showing up dead, including someone close to Gwen. Despite the methodical murders, the police are ignoring evidence that suggests a serial killer. In the midst of terrible loss and danger, Gwen—along with a mysterious and sexy guy who happens to be a Japanese fox spirit—risks her life to find the murderer. But Gwen is already the killer's next target . . .
Brock Koeman always hated werewolves and Others like them. While trying to trap a werewolf pack, he and his brother Chris were attacked and bitten—becoming what they have always feared and despised. While Chris fights for his life in the hospital, Brock faces another kind of battle: stifling his terrible urge to transform.
When werewolves kidnap him and the girl he loves, Brock discovers what it means to be Other—wondrous new sensations and experiences, overshadowed by constant danger—and the life that awaits him if he can ever accept his fate.
Starring the Japanese fox-spirits known as kitsune, the fiercely loyal dog-spirits who hate them, faceless ghosts, and more Others of Japan!

Wildefire by Karsten Knight
Every flame begins with a spark.
Ashline Wilde is having a rough sophomore year. She’s struggling to find her place as the only Polynesian girl in school, her boyfriend just cheated on her, and now her runaway sister, Eve, has decided to barge back into her life. When Eve’s violent behavior escalates and she does the unthinkable, Ash transfers to a remote private school nestled in California’s redwoods, hoping to put the tragedy behind her. But her fresh start at Blackwood Academy doesn’t go as planned. Just as Ash is beginning to enjoy the perks of her new school—being captain of the tennis team, a steamy romance with a hot, local park ranger—Ash discovers that a group of gods and goddesses have mysteriously enrolled at Blackwood…and she’s one of them. To make matters worse, Eve has resurfaced to haunt Ash, and she’s got some strange abilities of her own. With a war between the gods looming over campus, Ash must master the new fire smoldering within before she clashes with her sister one more time… And when warm and cold fronts collide, there’s guaranteed to be a storm.
And Then Things Fall Apart by Arlaina Tibensky
Keek is not having a good summer. She and her boyfriend have just had their Worst Fight Ever (on the subject of her virginity, nonetheless), she’s been betrayed by a best friend, her parents are splitting up, and her mother is on the other side of the country tending to Keek’s newborn cousin, who may or may not make it home from the hospital. Oh, and Keek’s holed up at her grandmother’s technology-barren house with an abysmal case of the chicken pox. In Keek’s words, “Sofa king annoying.”
With her world collapsing around her, Keek’s only solace comes from rereading Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar and typing on an old electric typewriter. Keek—whose snappy narrative voice is darkly humorous and hysterically blunt—must ultimately decide for herself which relationships to salvage, which to set free, and what it means to fall in love.
Love and Other Things I’m Bad At: Rocky Road Trip + Sundae My Prince Will Come by Catherine Clark
What’s a girl to do when there are two guys who seem like The One?
Just when Courtney has found the Best Boyfriend Ever (aptly named Grant Superior), she has to leave him to go to college, because apparently the universe doesn’t want her to be happy. Now that she’s three states away, what’s going to happen to her Superior relationship? And what about that cute guy she works with at college? No, not him. Him. Definitely getting in the way with his cuteness. But not distracting Courtney enough to make her stop wondering what exactly happened between Grant and her best friend, Beth, back home. Why can’t dating be as easy as eating a healthy vegan diet? Not that she’s ever managed that, either, but still.
Will Courtney ever figure out how to get this love thing right?
Supernaturally (Paranormalcy #2) by Kiersten White
Evie finally has the normal life she’s always longed for. But she’s shocked to discover that being ordinary can be . . . kind of boring. Just when Evie starts to long for her days at the International Paranormal Containment Agency, she’s given a chance to work for them again. Desperate for a break from all the normalcy, she agrees.
But as one disastrous mission leads to another, Evie starts to wonder if she made the right choice. And when Evie’s faerie ex-boyfriend Reth appears with devastating revelations about her past, she discovers that there’s a battle brewing between the faerie courts that could throw the whole supernatural world into chaos. The prize in question? Evie herself.
So much for normal.
Touch of Frost (Mythos Academy #1) by Jennifer Estep
My name is Gwen Frost, and I go to Mythos Academy — a school of myths, magic and warrior whiz kids, where even the lowliest geek knows how to chop off somebody's head with a sword and Logan Quinn, the hottest Spartan guy in school, also happens to be the deadliest.
But lately, things have been weird, even for Mythos. First, mean girl Jasmine Ashton was murdered in the Library of Antiquities. Then, someone stole the Bowl of Tears, a magical artifact that can be used to bring about the second Chaos War. You know, death, destruction and lots of other bad, bad things. Freaky stuff like this goes on all the time at Mythos, but I'm determined to find out who killed Jasmine and why—especially since I should have been the one who died...

Source: ARC Copy from Publisher
Blurb: Seventeen-year-old Dylan Kennedy always knew something was different about him, but until his mother abandoned him in the middle of Oregon with grandparents he’s never met, he had no idea what.
When Dylan sees a girl in white in the woods behind his grandparents’ farm, he knows he’s seen her before…in his dreams. He’s felt her fear, heard her insistence that only he can save her world from an evil lord who uses magic and fear to feed his greed for power.
When Dylan sees a girl in white in the woods behind his grandparents’ farm, he knows he’s seen her before…in his dreams. He’s felt her fear, heard her insistence that only he can save her world from an evil lord who uses magic and fear to feed his greed for power.
Unable to shake the unearthly pull to Kera, Dylan takes her hand. Either he’s completely insane or he’s about to have the adventure of his life, because where they’re going is full of creatures he’s only read about in horror stories. Worse, the human blood in his veins has Dylan marked for death…
Warning: This book is intoxicating!
My Rating: 5 of 5
My Cover Thoughts: I absolutely love this cover. The cover draws you in because it is a picture of a guy with piercing violet blue eyes staring into your soul. When I first saw the cover I said I have to read this book and I searched and searched for an ARC copy and when I was able to get one thanks to Misa Ramirez I nearly fell off the bed. Thanks Misa J
My Thoughts/Review: Okay I have read a lot of books but this book left me speechless! Shea did a great job weaving a beautiful story starting with Dylan and his mother and then Dylan learns he has grandparents that are alive. Once he gets to his grandparents house funny things start to happen and Dylan is thrown into a world he has no idea existed.
Dylan thinks he is seeing a ghost and is going crazy but he finds this guy on the internet who says he saw the same thing. They talk and find out they both saw the same thing. They decide they are going to catch this ghost and make plans to trap her with another friend. They go into the woods deep into the woods when they see her and begin to chase her. They chase her until she disappears into thin air. They stop and try to decide whether or not they are going to follow her and decide against it until they make a better plan.
But Dylan keeps looking at the space where the ghost has gone through and decides to follow her. He goes into this space where everything seems to slow down and time stands still. When he emerges on the other side of the wall he is stunned to see that there is a whole other world and he finds out that the ghost he has been seeing is really not a ghost but the girl from his dreams. Dylan can’t decide what to do but before he acts the girl his ghost tells him she is real and that he was sent to save her world. She is the girl from all his dreams and now he does not know what to think about seeing her in person.
Is he going crazy? Is he dreaming? Can this be true? What is he going to do about the girl of his dreams?
This is a must read, it will not disappoint you. This story captivates you from the very beginning and you will read through it in one day because you will be unable to put the book down.
Look out for August 02, 2011 that’s when the book hits the shelves! Happy Reading and welcome to the world of Teag!
Memorable Quotes: Page 189 Dylan says to Kera: “It’s a crazy thing, this confidence I have. I don’t know where it’s coming from, but I have no problem embracing it. “This feels right. I was born to be here, to be with you, and no one has the right to tell us differently. I’ll protect you. Do you trust me?”
Advice: This book is A MUST READ!! You will be disappointed if you do not read this book! *Swoon Worthy*

He understands the true Violet, but helping her on this path means they might never be together. Can Violet find a way to help this ghost without ruining her own chance at a future free of lies?
Warning: This book is suspenseful and captivating! A must read for the summer. Those of you who love a mystery and a story of blooming love you will fall in love with this story. Mr Darcy finally meets his perfect bride!
My Rating: 5 Roses
My Cover Thoughts: I absolutely loved this cover. There is a girl in a black dress looking out at the water. There is fog in the air and she looks like she is looking at something.
My Thoughts/Review: Haunting Violet was not as I expected, it was MORE! When I first read the blub I thought that it was going to be a regular murder mystery but instead it took me back to an era where being a proper lady meant everything to a young lady in waiting. Back to a time where gentlemen existed and where money and status meant everything to a family.
Violet lives with her mother who is a medium who talks to the dead but there is a secret that violet is keeping and with that secret things begin to happen and Violet has to put the pieces together before it is too late. She is a young lady that does not come from money so she can not marry into money unless her mother can secure her a Duke or an Earl and her mother will stop at nothing to secure her a wealthy husband.
Through the lies and deceit Violet must find out the truth in order to move on. She has help from an unlikely source and that is her best friend Elizabeth who is a daughter of a Duke. Once the lies are uncovered and the person who has started all this uncovered pieces starts to fall in place for a lot of people. Can Violet survive this game of cat and mouse with the murderer and will she be able to be with the one she truly loves?
This is such a hauntingly beautiful story you will not be able to put it down!
Memorable Quotes: Page 344 Colin and Violet talking to each other: “I unwrapped it, touched. It was a small brooch made of tin, in the shape of a rose.” “Oh, Colin, it’s lovely. Thank you!”
“I thought the rose would remind you of this place. I suppose you don’t need it now.” He pinned it to my blouse, just under my collar bone. “I love you, Violet. Could you love a gardener who can’t afford real silver, now that you’re an earl’s daughter living in a fine house?” I leaned forward so that my lips were so close to his they brushed lightly when I spoke. “I love you, Colin Lennox.” His grin was crooked and wicked. “Then we’ll be just fine.”
Advice: This is a MUST READ! I loved this book I read it in a day because I could not put it down. You will not be disappointed, I promise!

Check out these free books at smashwords.com
My contest to promote my new release, The Z Word, is live! The best part, is no cost is involved. It's free, baby, free--at least onSmashwords (Amazon is charging 99 cents, so a heads up there).
The Z Word is the first book in the Apocalypse Babes series.
It's been said that a sure sign of the coming apocalypse is an 80s roller skate disco movie coming to DVD (with special features). In the science-fiction novel series Apocalypse Babes, a stylish group of twenty-something friends are torn from the Babylonian arms of 2006 West Hollywood and flung nearly thirty years into the past. It might be because one of them purchased the taboo film in a nostalgic moment, setting off a chain of events more disturbing than a roller skating conga line. They wake up in an apocalyptic but strangely familiar landscape, complete with a hidden mountain compound and retro survivalists, hinting at hidden and retro secrets they must face if they want to survive.
Book One follows Seffy Carter and her longtime friends Gareth, Addison and Lani. The four besties share a past dysfunctional and dark enough to keep them bound together under do-over identities. But rends develop in their relationships from the flesh-eating pressures of ending up in 1980, in a Montana desert, surrounded by zombies wearing dated disco duds.
If you want to help promote the book--tweet, leave a review, friend me on Face Book, etc, send an email to fireflypressbooks@gmail.com detailing the ways you promoted. Each action is worth points and you'll be sent a confirmation email with your total. The drawing will be in October byRandom.org. See www.apocalypsebabes.com for all the details. Click on the contest sparkles.

Blurb: Where Mythology and Dystopia meet...
Piper’s world is dying. Global warming kills every living thing on Earth, and each day brings hotter temperatures and heat bubbles which threaten to destroy humanity. Amid this Global Heating Crisis, Piper lives with her mother who suffocates her more than the chaotic climate. When her mother is called away to meet the father Piper has been running from her entire life, Piper seizes an opportunity for freedom.
But when Piper discovers a world of mythology she never knew existed, she realizes her world is not the only one in crisis. While Gods battle for control of the Underworld, Piper's life spirals into turmoil, and she struggles to find answers to secrets kept from her since birth. And though she’s drawn to her classmate Shayne, he may be more than he claims. Piper has to choose whom she can trust and how she can save the people she loves even if it means the end of everything she’s ever known.
Warning: This book is CALIENTE! HOT… HOT… HOT….
My Rating:
My Cover Thoughts: The artist for this cover really kicked BUTT! There is this beautiful girl standing over earth looking into the horizon. You get this feeling like she is talking the sun and asking why it is so hot here on earth. The sun is shining on her face and you get a glimpse into what she is thinking.
My Thoughts/Review: Okay let me first start out by saying I really did not think I was going to like this book. I read the blurb and thought okay Global warming crisis in a book? WTH! But boy oh boy does P.J. surprise you with a story of a lifetime! I so loved it from the moment I opened the first page to the very end. The neatest part of the book was that it wrapped Greek mythology with a dystopian twist! This book is caliente and for those of you who don’t know that word it is hot…hot…hot…
The ultimate question you have to ask yourself is what would you do for love? How far would you go, to the ends of the earth? Would battle someone or something to get that love back?
Okay so here goes the review, Piper is a girl who is sheltered by her mom. She lives a life of loneliness except for her best friend Chloe. Then on her eighteenth birthday things change for Piper. She gets rebellious and gets a tattoo with Chloe of a Greek word standing for Sacrifice, θυσία (thysÃa). Soon after she gets her tattoo with Chloe she meets Shayne which she knows she has never seen before but she feels like she has known him her whole life. She is instantly attracted to him and wants to kiss him. Then comes along Mr bad boy Reese who is HOT times 100 and bad to the bones. Reese asks her out on a date and she says yes. She is afraid because her mother told her she can not date so she will have to sneak out and Reese says he will help her do that. There’s only one problem Chloe is in love with Reese and wants him all to herself. What is a girl to do?
This is a story of love and loss and finding your true self. It’s about sacrafices friends make for one another and how true love can stand the test of time. You will not be disappointed after reading this book. In fact it left me wanting more and I just have to find out what happens between Piper and Shayne and also Piper and Reese. Happy Reading because I know I did.
Memorable Quotes: Page 39 Reese and Piper are on a date. “You’re smiling.” Reese reaches across the table and takes my hand. I’ve set my wine glass
down, freshly filled and only a sip taken.
He’s right. I am smiling. “Is that okay?”
Reese flashes his teeth, and in his face, I see Shayne. I try to bring Shayne into my thoughts,
but he won’t come. He’s slipped out of my mind; there’s not room for both of them, and right
now, I’m totally occupied with the overpowering presence of Reese.
“You are totally sexy when you smile.”
I know my face must be bright red, but his comment only makes me smile more. “You’re not
so bad yourself.” And it’s true. Reese has been perfect. Funny. Gorgeous. Reckless.
“I love you.”
His words stop my breath.
“I swear I’m in love with you.”
My eyes manage to find his and lock onto them. I’m sure he’s joking. But his eyes aren’t
laughing. The blue’s darkened, and the emotion behind them makes me hold my breath until I
realize I’ve stopped breathing.

Maggie is an ordinary girl graduating from high school and wanting nothing more than to be done with school and work all summer at the diner before deciding what she is going to do. With this new decision on her mind she finds that some choices are hard to make but she has to learn to follow her heart. Falling in love is scary but once it is done there is no looking back. What is worse is when you are stuck in a love triangle and you don’t want anyone to get hurt feelings but you already know that at least two people are going to get hurt.
I loved this book right from the start! The opening lines are: I had waited for this day. For this one thing to complete me. To wrap up seventeen and a three quarter years of my life and set a pretty bow on it in the form of a graduation cap. I had waited for this one sheet of paper to tell me I had done something right.
I sat in my assigned seat, along with my classmates, in alphabetical order in front of the gym. The ones up front were in order by achievements, their faces lit with the relief of scholarships and graduation parties with gifts and family and friends. And getting out of this town.
I was numb. I had waited for this moment but now, didn‟t feel good inside. Didn‟t feel complete. Didn‟t feel achieved. I felt like I‟d slid by and barely made it. Which is exactly what I‟d done. I despised school. I was in the early release program for students who work after school, so we got out at 1:00 instead of 3:00 like everyone else. I was barely here and when I was I didn‟t want to be.
This story has so many toss and turns and lots of adventures, you will love it! What is one to do when you fall in love with a stranger? Should you listen to everyone else or should you just go for it. Maggie has made her decision and she is going through with her plan of loving and trusting someone when she could not do that a year ago. She has her best friend Becca and her ex-boyfriend Chad and her other best friend Kyle. They have spent all there lives together and had decided they were going to go to the same college and then things changed. Maggie had someone close to her walk right out of her life and senior year went from being fun to being unnoticed by everyone because she just wanted to do her senior year and get out of town far away from all the things that had happened over the year.
Then Maggie meets the love of her life and she finds out that being in love is complicated band that this particular relationship is going to be a tough one. But Maggie holds true to herself and her love and she makes things doable. What is in store for Maggie? Can she handle it? Does love survive battles? Hehehehe read on to find out!
Shelly Crane is the next Rachelle Mead! She has weaved a love story with loss and challenges that will pull at your heart and having you rooting for the couple. This is a must summer read. You will not be disappointed!
Memorable Quotes: “Hold on.” I walked up to his cousin a few feet away. I looked up into his face, at least half a foot higher than mine, probably more. “I‟m really glad I was there.”
“Me too. Thank you. You ever need anything- a new pair of rollerblades, a Popsicle, a kidney- it‟s yours.”
I laughed and tucked my hair behind me ear as he chuckled too and shuffled his feet.
“Ok. I‟m Maggie by the way.”
I stuck my hand out towards him and smiled.
“Maggie,” he repeated and I bit my lip at the sound of my name on his lips. “Caleb.” He took my hand and I felt an instant jolt go through my body that made me gasp.
Not like a girly wow he‟s touching me jolt. I mean an actual jolt. Like it felt as if fire was racing through my veins and I was standing in water with a blow dryer. My breaths ceased to exist and my blood felt cold in my hot skin. My eyes fluttered automatically at the pleasure pain of it. I saw images, flashes of things. Me on a porch. Tan arms going around me from behind and a brown haired head sitting atop mine then leaning down, kissing my neck. Then that image vanished and a new one appeared.
Advice: This is a summer MUST read!

Sleight Review
Title: Sleight
Author: Jennifer Sommersby
Series: Book # 1
Release Date: March 23, 2011
Source: Amazon.com
Blurb: Her mom is dead.
Ghosts follow her around.
Her best friend is an elephant.
And she’s about to meet the biggest game changer of all: a boy. With a secret...
When circus-dwelling Gemma Flannery learns she will be attending public school for the first time in her seventeen years, little does she know that fitting in with her 12th-grade classmates will be the least of her concerns. A pro at hiding her knack for seeing the dead (“shades”), Gemma is grieving the recent suicide of her mentally ill mother, a process eased by the introduction of her first real love interest, the charming and painfully handsome Henry Dmitri, who is harboring his own collection of dangerous secrets. Together, they will be presented with a frightening challenge: to assume their roles as heirs to a 3000-year-old magical text, the AVRAKEDAVRA, a book the über-rich, sleight-of-being master Lucian Dmitri would do anything to get his hands on. As each terrifying layer in her new reality melts away, Gemma unearths truths that her quiet, nomadic life with the Cinzio Traveling Players is not at all what she’d always cherished. Gemma and Henry must rely on each other to stop Lucian’s diabolical plotting that will bring the world to its tired, scab-riddled knees, and are sent on the flight of their young lives, to save themselves, their families, and the world from the darkest kind of destruction.
Let the chase begin…
Warning: This book is very addictive and you will not be able to put it down!
My Rating:
My Cover Thoughts: I absolutely loved the cover of this book. There is this beautiful girl with long red curly hair lying with her eyes closed relaxing on the green grass.
My Thoughts/Review: Let me start out by saying this was a wonderful read from what I had been reading. This is a story set in the circus. I have never read a book that had that scenery so it caught my eye. I absolutely loved the book.
Characters in this book were great and you got to see the dynamics of a true family not blood related but bonded together by the circus. You saw how they loved and trusted one another. Ted was the circus owner and he was married to Marlene who was Gemma surrogate mother. Then you had fun loving blind uncle Irwin who despite losing his eye sight in an accident still worked ion the circus. Then there is loveable, cocky Ash and his twin sister Junie who is Gemma’s best friend. Then there is Gemma who is the center of the story because she is left an orphan because her mother killed herself and left her to live with Ted and Marlene. Then enter the man of the hour Henry Dmitri loveable and HOT HOT HOT! He and Gemma have this instant bond and begin this journey of theirs together. As you all know there is always a villain in every good story and we have drum roll please! Lucian Dmitri, he is charming and cunning and loveable oh and also very very very rich! And OMG he is bad bad bad…… He wants Gemma and will stop at nothing to get her.
This story is filled with ghosts, magic both good and evil and love. You will be pulled into the story from the very beginning of the story and will not be able to put it down. You will be caught up in the adventure of a lifetime with Gemma and Henry as they try to get to their destination in one piece.
I will give you all a special treat the first few opening sentences are the last funeral I went to was for a lion. Sarah. She was mauled to death by her lover. There was no casket. Just a canvas tarp and some very thick plastic….
Go out and get the book to read more you will not be disappointed!
I loved this book and I loved how Jennifer gave us a backdrop of the circus life. Jennifer is the next J.K. Rowling with this series! Congrats Jen on such a wonderful book.
Memorable Quotes: Page 287 Gemma and Henry are on the train and they are in their room getting ready to fall asleep.
Henry bent over and kissed my forehead, but I grabbed the back of his neck and pressed my lips against his. He kissed me, too, gentle at first but with more vigor when I refused to release his head. He tasted so good. His hair felt soft in my fingers. I loved his smell, the feel of his face so close to mine.
“Sleep now,” he said.
I smiled at him, my cheeks flushed but not from embarrassment.
“Stay close. Don’t leave me,” I whispered.
“Never, G.” He stroked my forehead as I succumbed to blissful, perfect sleep, safe in the arms of my future.
Advice: This is a summer MUST READ!!!!!!!!!

Good Bye........
God knows I loved you so
Once when the stars shined so bright
On a night where love was so bright
Did all I could to love you but it wasn’t enough
But at the end of the day I can truly say we are two different people
Yes we must go our separate ways, time heals all wounds
Enough of the lies my love, good bye……………
